SCHOLARSHIP OVERVIEW

The La'Tasha D. Mayes Wholly Impossible Scholarship is offered to Black girls, young women, and gender expansive youth (ages 14-24) seeking secondary education focused in Reproductive Justice. 

Five recipients in the Greater Pittsburgh Area will be selected to receive $1,000 scholarships. 

The deadline to apply is October 6th 2023 11:59pm ET.

Applicants should display Reproductive Justice activism and advocacy including but not limited to voter engagement, environmental protections, community beautification, Black maternal health.

Along with an active community organizing or engagement background, applicants should plan to major in a study focused on the core areas of Reproductive Justice: social justice, environmental justice, Black maternal health, mass incarceration, policy advocacy; or be able to connect their current major to the Reproductive Justice movement.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicant must...

  • Identify as a Black girl, young women, or gender-expansive person.

  • Reside in Alleghany County.

  • Be enrolled/accepted to higher level of education (trade, college, university).

  • Complete a 500 word essay about plans to use education to advance the Reproductive Justice movement.

  • Complete the online application.

  • Provide proof of community activism (community based or school based).

  • Be currently participating in or have recently participated in some type of community activism related to Reproductive Justice.



KEY POPULATIONS

The Wholly Impossible Scholarship focuses on Black girls, young women, and gender expansive youth in Allegheny County including grades 9-12 and students who are 2 years post-graduation from high school. Within this key population New Voices will also focus on organizations, student unions, and social groups that serve the aforementioned population.

  • Black Girls, young women, and all gender expansive youth: (Ages 14-24): New Voices will offer supplemental assistance to students seeking financial support in preparation for school. 

  • Youth Serving Organizations: New Voices will connect and build relationships with youth serving organizations to bring education, awareness, and action on Reproductive Justice issues.   

  • Student Unions and Social Groups: New Voices will bring awareness and resources to college campuses and social groups advocating for Reproductive Justice issues.
