Our Executive Director

Congrats Beulah Osueke

After an expansive search, the Board of Directors for New Voices for Reproductive Justice has announced that Beulah Osueke has been named the organization’s full-time Executive Director. Since August 2023, as the Interim Executive Director, Osueke has dutifully and skillfully guided New Voices through a period of transition. Her time in the role clearly highlighted her passion for the Reproductive Justice movement, Black women and Black queer people, and her ability to guide New Voices to and through its next chapter.

Learn More About Beulah

Beulah has worked closely with leadership at New Voices during her five years here on mission advancement initiatives, communications, and programming. She developed a community organizing framework for Black women and queer people, including city-based leadership development cohorts, RJ IGNITE, which launched this past fall. Through teach-ins, workshops, door canvassing, and digital advocacy, Beulah has spearheaded community initiatives dedicated to resourcing Black women and birthing people with the tools and education needed to make informed decisions about their health, voting rights, and overall well being.

During her eight-year tenure as West Catholic High School Girls Basketball Head Coach, Beulah became the first Black woman to capture a State Title in Pennsylvania (2021) and the first Black coach of any gender, to capture the Philadelphia Catholic League championship in the conference’s 102 year history (2020). She was also named 2 x PIAA Coach of the Year and led the Lady Burrs to 6 PIAA District titles. Beulah has a measurable impact on Philadelphia youth and grassroots leaders in the athletic and justice realm. Although she has stepped away from coaching in an official capacity, she continues working tirelessly through New Voices to introduce life-affirming education and power building strategies to  young people, mentors, and leaders from all walks of life.

"I am extremely excited and personally overjoyed that my colleague and friend Beulah Osueke has been named Executive Director of New Voices for Reproductive Justice. In this moment, we need bold, steadfast leadership that honors the complexity, intersectionality and compassion needed in the fight to control our own bodies.

As the Interim Director, Beulah showed her commitment to the work and I know she will continue to be a powerful force breaking down barriers for unapologetically Black and queer voices to be heard in the Reproductive Justice movement. There’s no doubt that Beulah will use her role to advocate for Black women, Black queer folks, and Black marginalized people. I trust this Black woman, and I look forward to working alongside Beulah and New Voices to advance its mission."

Kellie Copeland, Executive Director of Pro-Choice Ohio

"It has been a privilege getting to know Beulah through working to pass the Reproductive Freedom Amendment to the Ohio Constitution and Patients to Advocates (a joint project of our organizations, Faith Choice Ohio and Preterm). She is an observant and strategic leader; I think that comes from her experience as both a team coach and player. She uses her insights to challenge what needs to be changed, and to affirm what is working.  Beulah doesn’t just look, she sees; she doesn’t just hear, she listens. She brings heart and joy to the movement. To work alongside Beulah is to be in relationship with her.  I’m delighted to see her take the helm at New Voices."

Maureen Deviney, Assistant Principal of Academic Affairs for West Catholic High School

"I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Beulah Osueke on her newly appointed position as Executive Director of the New Voices. I had the distinct pleasure of working with Beulah as an assistant coach at West Catholic. Throughout the 8 years that we coached together, I watched “Coach B” execute her vision with patience, determination, and the mindset of building a program, not just coaching a team. B used the vehicle of women’s basketball to create a culture and a community which inspired a group of young women, and allowed them to grow in self-confidence, develop a sense of competence and mastery as they learned new skills, overcome challenges, and set and achieve goals. B infused resilience and grit into all aspects of the program and culture she created. She made sure that when her players faced setbacks, losses, and injuries, they were able to use those disappointments to develop resilience when faced with adversity. The mental toughness that was a staple of B’s vision for the development of the young women she worked with, could be applied to all areas of their lives. B’s vision also included teaching her players the importance of communication, collaboration, and most importantly, trust. The players simply thought they were playing basketball, but B was teaching these young women skills that they will take with them through life.

I am inspired by what B was able to accomplish, and the approach to leadership that B used to guide not only her players, but also her coaching staff, the players’ parents, the school leaders, and the entire school community.  B led an entire community, driven by a vision and mission that she remained true to throughout her tenure. When I think of the qualities that best describe B, I think of the qualities of a true leader: vision, integrity, empathy, resilience, empowerment, adaptability, collaboration, and inspiration.  I am truly humbled to be able to call B my friend and I am excited for what the future holds for New Voices under her leadership."
